Works well, fits poorly

I will be visiting people who have computers without SD/SDHC readers. In order not to risk carrying my laptop, I bought an SD/SDHC card reader (plus two other types). In order to have my own programs and not pollute my host computers, I downloaded PortableApps onto a 32GB Class 10 SDHC card. I tried the adapter with an SDHC card inserted into the adapter and the adapter was plugged into one of the USB 2.0 ports on my computer. The combination worked well with no visible loss of speed. The only difficulty encountered was that the adapter is wider than the standard USB port, the adapter did not fit another USB port that was already plugged into the adjacent port. I have two pairs of USB ports on my laptop that are far enough apart that a standard-width USB plug fits in both ports. One pair is used for my mouse and external drive. The other pair already has a cooling fan connected to a connector. I had to use a 1 foot (33 cm) USB 2.0 Type A female cable to connect the adapter to the remaining USB port. This width issue seems to be common with USB devices, not USB cables. Two of my amateur radio programmers have the same problem. That's why I have and carry a couple of short USB Type-A connector cables, male to female. Sources for patch cords: 1 foot (33 cm) cables from Merit Line. 7.5 inch (19 cm) cable from Cyber Guys.

Pros
  • Fully compliant with Hi-Speed USB 2.0 specification
Cons
  • Minor issues
