I was hesitant to buy this as some of the comments in the reviews were mentioned as negative but still agreed to buy due to the brand's good reputation in the workplace. I needed this to switch between a company laptop running Windows 10 and a Gigabyte BRIX running Ubuntu 20. I was concerned that the security policy would not work well on the laptop with KVM. No questions. I also had no problems running it on Linux. I haven't experienced the desktop disappearing or being redrawn. It looks like the product performs desktop emulation as there are two behaviors I'm not happy with. They fall under the "mild irritation” category. 1) Moving the cursor to the extreme right corner of the screen will automatically switch to a different KVM input (this is by design as stated in the product manual). For some, that may be welcome. I prefer to be able to disable these features (because I don't use them and don't like them). Another oddity is that when you move the cursor to the bottom of the screen or up, it appears opposite where it was. this. Scroll all the way down, if you scroll to the edge, the cursor will appear at the top of the screen (and vice versa). This is by no means a deal breaker, but worth noting. Apart from these two issues (for which I am deducting 1 star), the product looks very well made, sells at a good price and there is an online warranty registration for the product which gives you a 3 year warranty.
