Judging by the pictures I thought that the lower half of the device is bright. No, that is not so. The light comes from a small lip protruding from the top half. Why does it matter? The back, which plugs into the socket, is behind the lower half of the lamp. So it closes the top exit so you can use the top exit if you don't want to block the exit. If you have something plugged in underneath it may block/absorb some of the light. It's not a deal breaker, but it's something to consider. I like the light color and brightness of the light.
