Review on πŸŽ’ Black Thule Subterra 30L Backpack by Devon Dober

Revainrating 4 out of 5

For professionals with style

The Subterra line is beautiful and elegant. The craftsmanship, detailed structure, and (funny) bright colors show others that you believe in quality, clean lines, and a great sense of style. This is what originally drew me to Thule and this line of backpacks. I first bought a 23 liter Subterra in the color Mineral, but when I first got my hands on it, it seemed too small. It could hold my journal, my MacBook Air (with a bit more space), pens/pencils, a few folders and a small change of clothes. Not wanting buyers to regret it, I also ordered a 30 liter. When I opened the package, I immediately regretted it. At first I even thought they would send me a 34 liter. The 30L loses all the qualities I found in the 23L, despite what the photos, videos and dimensions show. What I didn't realize until I got my hands on it is that the 30 liter bag is HUGE in comparison. Even with all my work stuff it would match 2 outfits including shoes. 23L says "30-year-old pro" while 30L shouts "Fest Life college graduate who has completed his sabbatical." Marketing both 23L and 30L can be deceiving. Watch the video and see how they hold up on tables and how the 15-inch MacBook makes the long journey to reach the bottom of the laptop compartments. Please note that unless you are viewing the product page on a laptop, you may not always see a direct Thule comparison. Important note: I'm 5'10" tall and both have a longer body as they cover more of your back. So they just look like smooth/minimal pods when fully loaded. This is not achievable nor practical unless the 30 liter backpack is used for hiking, if it doesn't fit it has a lot of creases and doesn't look right, that's not to say the 23 liter brother doesn't have some great ones compared to its 30 liter brother Features are missing, such as better organized compartments, multiple pockets and access points, and mounts for a large Yeti thermos (for example). As a result, I returned 30 liters and left 23 liters. If Thule ever decides to launch a hybrid 25 -liter Subterra with a 30 liter organization I will be the first to buy it!
