Having used a cheap $25 knife set from a local hypermarket for the past ten years, I was very happy to receive a Hanmaster knife set. My excitement wasn't overly so as it looked lovely on the kitchen table. The knives were packaged well and were easy to remove from the box with no risk of accidental cuts. The block of wood itself has a nice dark oak finish, but some of the edges have a rough finish, particularly in the holes in each of the knife slots. It's not a big problem and a few passes of sandpaper won't fix anything. I am considering applying a light coat of dark stain to make it stand out better on the countertop. The wood block timer function was a nice and unexpected feature. It feels solid and doesn't feel cheap. I played with it and it was pretty accurate compared to the timer on my phone. The only downside of the timer is that it doesn't ring once the countdown reaches zero. The mechanical spring simply stops clicking and the timer stops. As such, it's probably best used while you're still working in the kitchen, rather than as a set-and-forget timer. The knives themselves are SHARP right out of the box! There is a slight caveat to checking knife sharpness with your fingers, but everyone does it and I'm no exception! You have a good sense of weight. Not too easy, but not too heavy either. The knives' durable, one-piece steel construction gives them a premium look. I've tested the included knife sharpener with some of my old kitchen knives and it gives them a pretty nice edge after just a few passes through the sharpener. I am very happy with this item. I think this would make a great wedding gift for a young couple just starting out in life or for a college graduate moving into their own home for the first time. There are better and more expensive knife sets out there, but this Hanmaster set is a great choice for those transitioning into the adult world.
