so wide my knees are constantly resting against it when I pedal

This is a wide bag. When I mount it on the top tube as shown in the product photos, my knees push in when I pedal. Depending on the size and geometry of your bike, you may or may not have the same problem. Since the bag is attached to our bike with flexible straps, it also wobbles a bit on the bike.
