If you're like me, you have a lot of devices that use traditional (USB-A) connectors and compact USB-C (or Thunderbolt 3). I bought a set of USB-C to USB-3 adapters from Syntech and found them to be invaluable. Then I encountered the opposite problem - I had a portable drive with a USB-C connector, but I needed to connect it to a laptop with a traditional USB-A connection. This adapter was perfect! To test both, I used two adapters together to connect the drive to the USB-C part. That's right - the USB-C connector to the [USB-C to USB-A] adapter to the [USB-A to USB-C] adapter. If there were problems with an adapter, this would certainly indicate them. No problem! I connected my Macbook Air and ran first aid to make sure the drive was checked. It was like this. I highly recommend having a few of these with you. A 3-pack for only $8.99 is a steal!
