Review on ☕ Cafec Premium Coffee Filter: Dark Roast (4 Cups) - V60 02 Style Disposable Paper Filter for Pour Over Dripper Brewing by Todd Winter

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Edit: OK, but not for beginners.

While I still stick by the original content of my review (see below), after tweaking the brew recipe (and purchasing a better grinder), I found that the slower flow rate these filters offer is a very smooth one and can produce delicious cup of coffee. However, if you are using an entry-level grinder like the Baratza Encore, I strongly advise against using these filters as they are extremely prone to clogging due to the amount of fine particles produced by lower-end grinders. In general, if you have a good enough grinder for the job (like the 1ZPresso JX-Pro or Fellow Ode) it might be worth experimenting with. I personally won't be buying these again as I would have preferred a filter with a slightly higher flow rate that would allow me to grind a little finer and hopefully achieve a similar extraction in less time. Original Rating (1/5): After seeing some very positive reviews of these filters online, I decided to try them out for myself. However, what I didn't know at the time was that Cafec appeared to have made some changes to the way these filters were made between the date of these reviews and the day I placed my order. These new "T-92 Light Roast" filters empty very slowly, resulting in twice the brewing time compared to standard Hario filters. Using Cafec's recommended "osmotic flow" technique (a slow and finicky technique even at the best of times), I regularly got brew times in excess of 10 minutes, even with the same grind settings I normally use for a French press or cold brew use. Using a more standard potting technique (similar to James Hoffman/Scott Rao), the rest time is typically 3.5-4 minutes for 300g of water, resulting in either a bitter, over-extracted coffee at my normal grind settings, or a sour, under-extracted coffee with coarser grind settings, apparently without a middle grind. I would not recommend buying these filters until Cafec fixes these issues.

Pros
  • Premium Coffee Paper Filter: The world's first premium paper filter with flow rate difference so you can enjoy your favorite coffee in three different ways!! 1) Lower flow rate for recommended light roast for improved aroma and clean taste. 2) Medium flow rate for the recommended dark roast for enhanced body and sweetness. 3) Fast flow rate for recommended medium roast for better balance and flavor.
