I have a Jeep Wrangler. Had to buy a hitch extension so my bike rack could fit with the spare tire. This stopped all fluctuations, mostly from Philadelphia to Acadia and most of the way back (16 hours total). It came loose after about 3 hours of rest which meant the bike rack wobbled a bit but not catastrophically. Now I know that on long trips you have to keep a wrench in the trunk.
