Inglamorous simply does what needs to be done.

I've bought this 3 times in the last few years and the only problems I've ever had have been from my own ignorance. I have successfully used them to program ESP32, Arduino and also to provide a UART between my computers and various embedded chips (e.g. PIC32MZ, a kind of Motorola chip in a portable gaming device). Most problems arise when you do not understand how to connect it to the intended device. . Some very simple rules: 1. RX connects to TX and TX connects to RX. RX-RX and TX-TX don't work, hope you understand.2. Even if you don't connect 3.3V or 5V power supply from the FTDI board to the device, you still need to connect GND to GND of your device. Without this you will have an unstable connection.3. Make sure you select the correct logic level (3.3V or 5V) with the jumper next to the connector pins. I successfully killed the Arduino without doing this. Don't repeat my success in this area. Other than that, these notorious boards did everything I wanted them to do and more. They're inexpensive, and they just worked for me, at least (once I got over my own ignorance of how to use them). I recommend it to others looking for a flexible device to program or communicate with embedded processors.

Pros
  • RXD/TXD transceiver communications indicator with 500mA self-healing fuse
Cons
  • So far so good
