Review on πŸ’₯ TOROSUS 256GB M.2 NVME PCIe 2280 Internal SSD: High-Performance Solid-State Drive by Darnell Golden

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Fast, but I don't know how long it will last, and not cheap enough to overcome compromises

Pros:βœ”οΈ Fast: tested at 1.87 GiB/s and 1.09 GiB/s sequential Read/Write βœ”οΈ Affordable (but not cheaper than best competing options) Cons: ❌ Lifespan not disclosed ❌ Flash type not disclosed ❌ Not suitable for virtualization (does not support PCI-e pass-through) ❌ Claimed clear top speed is useless ❌ Unbranded internally. It looks like NVMe SSDs have become so popular that we've reached the point where anyone can make them and flood the market with generic options - and this SSD is so versatile that even its PCI ID doesn't match it Contains manufacturer or model names ( they just added "NVME" in the field. Manufacturer and "SSD <size>" in the model field 🀣). This SSD is quite fast, achieving sequential read and write speeds of 1.87 GiB/s and 1.09 GiB/s, respectively, in my tests. πŸ‘πŸ» The question is, will it last? This product uses a Silicon Motion SM2263XT controller paired with an unknown type of flash memory and no lifespan information has been provided. πŸ‘ŽπŸ» This is worrying, because the most important thing is not MTBF in hours or warranty in years, but how much data can be written to the SSD before the flash memory wears out. Due to a faulty MSI-X implementation, SSDs with SM226x series controllers have problems transferring to VMs, with KVM/QEMU error "failed to add PCI Capability 0x11 [0x50] @ 0xb0: table and pba overlap or they don't match outputs in the BAR or doesn't align." There are hacks that should work around this, but none of them worked for me with this SSD. If you're interested in virtualization, you should look for a product that runs on a different controller At the time of writing this article, the price of this product is in line with the options of reputable manufacturers that clearly state the lifespan, flash type, sequential and random read/write speed, unfortunately I don't see a place for these given the current asking price SSD on the market.

Pros
  • Rugged construction
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
