Adjustment required for best scan quality

I used to have an Epson GT-1500 office scanner. After serving me for 4 years, it becomes incompatible with the latest Widows 10 update. I don't know if it's Epson's fault or Microsoft's. Anyway, I decided to get a new scanner. One feature the GT-1500 lacks is automatic single-pass duplex scanning. I scan and digitize as many documents as possible, so this is an important and useful feature. That's one of the reasons I chose this Brother multifunction machine. Since I scan my documents to PDF in black and white 99% of the time, I tested this feature first after setting up the device. Using the default black and white scanning settings, the initial results were disappointing to say the least. The quality is a far cry from the GT-1500's scan quality. I have requested a refund. Then I decided to play around with the settings. It turns out that you need to adjust the parameters a lot to get satisfactory results. I ended up finding that the best setting for a black and white scan that works for me is to adjust the image quality by reducing the brightness and contrast to the lowest setting - 50%! Also turn on "Remove Bleeding" and set it to the lowest level. In the storage settings, set the PDF quality to maximum and enable compression if you want to keep the file size. Another disappointment is that two other key features are missing: the first is a quick scan and preview of the document, and then crop the scanned area; The other is to enhance the colors of the different red, blue and green color channels. I thought such features would be pretty basic, but this machine doesn't have them. In any case, with the settings above, I can get a scan quality similar to that of my GT-1500. On the other hand, I like that I can customize the scanning workflow and add it as a button to the home screen. Also, the 1-pass duplex scanning/copying really speeds things up, although there is the occasional slight blurring or ghosting. The scan resolution can go up to 1200x1200 so this is useful when I need very fine detail. Printing and copying work as expected, nothing special here. The fax function has not been tested. Who still uses fax today? All in all it's a decent car for $189 + the taxes I paid. The lack of a preview means I have to crop the document in Acrobat, and the lack of color enhancement is just a minor annoyance as I only need it occasionally. I've only had it for a few days so I can't say how reliable it will be for years to come or how good Brother's customer support is. After much deliberation I have decided to cancel the return and keep it to myself instead. I still have a month to change my mind just in case something goes wrong!

Pros
  • Designed for productivity, this MFCL2740DW replacement saves time with one-pass two-sided copying and scanning via the 50-page automatic document feeder, as well as multi-page copy, scan and fax capabilities
Cons
  • Mainly ok, but...
