The pump is advertised as aluminum but only the outside diameter is aluminum. The inside of the pump is made of plastic, including the central moving shaft that drives the piston. I find the shaft strong enough, but being plastic it has a large diameter. The advantage of this design over a small diameter metal shaft is that the piston area is reduced and the pump does not deliver as much air per stroke as one would expect. I like the folding handle, air cartridge and foot pedal so I'll leave the pump.
