Review on Enhanced Logitech X-540 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer - Maximizing your Audio Experience by Matt Dyen

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great value for money

I bought this speaker set to replace a dying old one and also to upgrade to surround sound. The sound quality is pretty good. It's not audiophile quality, but it's better than I expected at this price point. I also like the control box which is a must in a modern speaker package. The module also has a headphone jack, but I end up using the jack on the computer itself. When I'm playing a game and I set it to 5.1, the center channel doesn't mix with the stereo sound that the headphones are using. If I connect directly to the computer, it mixes the center channel with both left and right. The cables are long enough for my use which is a desktop speaker system. I wouldn't use this for a TV unless it was in a small room. In this case, too, you'd better have a real audio receiver and speaker. It has NO digital audio input. However, it includes three stereo cables (front left/right, left/right reading, and center/subwoofer). Therefore, you will hardly find anything other than a computer to connect this to. Even with minor imperfections, I give it five stars simply because I bought it for a specific purpose and it works perfectly. Update 2019: Seven years later and it still sounds great. Again, it's not the best sound, but it's certainly not a low-quality sound system. However, I have a comment that came up a few years ago. The RCA connection to the front left speaker sometimes fails. I get little to no sound through this speaker, and it happens randomly. I have to reinstall the RCA connector and test it in windows sound control panel until it gives normal sound, after that it works fine for a few minutes to a few days. The problem is most likely with the cable itself. Maybe the wires inside are damaged? It started all of a sudden and I never twisted the wires or dealt with it in any other way. manufacturing defect? I don't know, but I'll probably cut off the existing connector and plug in the new one. Luckily I have a soldering iron and know how to do minor electronics repairs - I've swapped out enough cheap capacitors in various devices to be sure. But if someone without these skills faced the same problem, it would be very frustrating. For this reason I am deducting a star from my original rating.
