Review on ⚡️ Ultimate Protection: Ubiquiti ETH-SP-G2 Surge Suppressor/Protector by Dave Mosby

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Roasted network ports of the ether after storms, the suppressor is intact.

This type of device is difficult to verify that it works as advertised. And considering how powerful a lightning strike or transient is, it's unfair to blame them when they ultimately fail to protect your gear. However, I'm giving this one a star because what I experienced discouraged me and destroyed any sense of protection I might have had. About 10 days ago we had a near lightning strike near my house. I don't know where the blow actually hit, but the damage was enough that I had to take cover. I lost several IP cameras, several PoE and PoE+ switches, and a 500ft run of gel-filled unshielded Cat5e cable (see photo). This was BEFORE I installed the Ubiquity security devices. I have three main switch positions. house, barn and at my gate. All three are connected by approximately 500 feet of Category 5e underground cable. When lightning struck outside, the transient descended into the barn and then into the house, burning many network devices along the way. So I figured that installing these Ubiquity surge protectors at each end of a 500-foot run would damage an area. Incidentally, there was no other electrical damage to off-grid devices in the house. We had a pretty strong thunderstorm last night. Although we did not observe any close-in strikes, the switch at the gate and the switch in the shed failed at the terminals that had a 500-foot cable connected between them. None of the Ubiquity end suppressors failed. Both still allow full data transfer. Both were grounded within 20 inches of the ports. Fortunately, only individual ports failed on both switches. This is better than losing the switch or other devices connected to it. I don't know if Ubiquity actually prevented major damage, or if what I experienced would have happened without suppressors. I really think either a) it's snake oil giving a false sense of security or b) I'm expecting too much from a $12 device.
