Review on Baratza Sette 30 Precise Conical Burr Grinder by Jennifer Romero

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Have owned it for 3 years.

Pros: - It's a sturdy grinder - It's good enough for our espresso machine (Breville) - We grind about 15-20 times a day. (Owner 3 years) - Easy to clean - Baratza has parts for almost everything. (Which I have successfully done). Bad: noisy noise. However, this largely depends on what type of coffee beans you are using. For some, the grind just shows up with static. For others, it's really clean and tidy. Ugly: - Baratza's gearbox is designed to fail. To be clear, they use _plastic gears_ with _plastic gears_ for everything. With that kind of torque in a burr grinder, the gears immediately start to wear and crash into each other. The ball bearing guide is all plastic with a couple of bearings in it (not enough!). One day your machine will start making very loud noises and the grinding will become very uneven and eventually stop. The only solution is to buy a new gearbox from Baratza (luckily you can) and follow the instructions on YouTube on how to disassemble and replace the gearbox. If those gears (or at least cogs!) were metal, this unit would last a lifetime and deserve a solid 5 stars. I just replaced the gearbox last week (again after 3 years of daily use 10-20 times a day) and the unit is purring again. Cost: $30 for the gearbox and 1 hour for painstaking disassembly and reassembly. I'll buy a spare gearbox in case they stop building the damn thing.
