Simple job well worth the effort

This was the first bulb change in my Germ Guardian AC5000 air filter. I've had the device for 15 months and it works almost constantly, but not always with the UV light on. The filter provided what I needed most - cleaning the air of dust and allergens. Using UV light to kill bacteria, viruses, germs and mold spores was just as important, but as others have said if the device is running in your bedroom the blue light will be bright and distracting. In the end I put the device in my living room and turned on the light. By using UV light, I feel better about the air in my apartment. It was on most of the time - almost 24/7. I would say I managed to get a good 10 months of almost uninterrupted use of the original lamp. Replacing a lightbulb is very easy, just follow the instructions in the manual available on the web. Turn off the device. Remove the back cover and filter. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the metal plate covering the back of the lamp. Grab the lamp with a soft cloth and turn it a quarter turn - you will see the pins become visible in a small hole in the top of the lamp. Once you do that, everything else will be easy. Gently pull out the bulb. Place it in the tube where the new lightbulb arrived. (Very strong cardboard tube!) Insert the new bulb and twist 1/4 turn to lock it in place. Replace metal plate and screws. Vacuum the carbon filter while you have it, put it back in place and snap the cap into place. (It doesn't work until the cover is attached.) When you turn on the device, the light may or may not flash. To reset it, just press and hold the power button for 3-4 seconds. Everything is ready! I was a little scared reading some of the other reviews. so i hope this is helpful. If the lamp does not work, contact Revain for replacement instructions. Much luck! Update July 21, 2016 - Answers where the blue light is visible: You should see a large blue V-shaped light just below the chrome bar indicating the UV light is on and through the shielded opening at the front you can only see a small streak of blue light. It's best to view the entire device in the dark - UV light shines easily through the vents on the front and back. No bright blue, just a faint glow - toggle the UV off and back on and you'll see. Remember, UV isn't meant to shine on you - it's surrounded by metal and filters to treat the air in this small space as it flows through.
