Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent digital photo frame if you don't expect change

Disclaimer: This review is not Revain or manufacturer specific. This is solely what I observed on the product itself and is not influenced by outside sources. In other words, this is an honest review. Let's get to the rating. I'll start with a summary. Good: Decent size for the price Image matches framed printed photos of similar size Handles more than photos Has additional features that make it a good bedside table Multiple connection options Works with external storage Touchscreen Can be better described as a dedicated tablet Power cord is longer than standard USB Has remote app Bad: Screen surface scratches easily It's thick and the stand is long (this thing has a BIG footprint) Runs Android KitKat Requires constant power, no battery options that I know of No ability to add apps for more functionality Requires Wi-Fi to enable additional features No wired network or POE options Application is buggy and ineffective for crowd control Ugliness: No security updates No OS updates No way to test software for security effectiveness Has Sch knows 3rd party eavesdropping devices not created by a company with commercial presence in multiple countries (helpdesks, tech support, development etc.) Details: My first impression was that it seemed a bit fragile as it is light and brittle like plastic feels. It's a little different from the solid feel most phones and tablets have these days. It's okay if you set it up and forget it. I'm not sure how he'll handle falling to the ground. Accessories are good. Everything comes with a tablet that is needed for everything to work. And work. After turning it on, I had no trouble setting it up. Soon he was connected to WiFi, receiving information about the weather and waiting for photos. The main screen is laid out fairly decently and gives you access to everything. The annoying floating menu can also be easily deactivated. Putting pictures in a frame is more difficult. If you're only working with a few images at a time, any wireless option will do (there's an app, as well as the ability to FTP directly to the frame). Dumping multiple images is best done with an SD card or USB stick. Wired USB falls somewhere in the middle for some reason. Transmission is better and more reliable than wireless, but not true USB speed. Therefore, the best way to place images in a frame is to create a library on external storage and then attach it to the frame. I've never tried this app, but other people have pointed out issues I've had with the wireless network. discovered it was running Android KitKat. It is an old and unsupported operating system, which also means that it does not receive security updates. Dragontouch builds tablets with Oreo if not higher. Why this frame sticks to KitKat eludes me. Apart from the old operating system, there is almost no way to check installed software for security vulnerabilities. I had security cameras that claimed privacy, but I was able to bypass network security measures and broadcast the video on the internet. I've had tablet apps sending data to external parties that shouldn't be there. This frame is now under the same scrutiny and I have not been able to verify its safety. Even the ability to post pictures over the internet doesn't solve the problem. This thing could be a major security hole. That being said, if you're uploading images via wired or external means and only using them as frames (no Wi-Fi), this is indeed a decent frame for the price. Just be aware that by connecting this online you may be exposing yourself to serious security vulnerabilities. This is not to say that this is a huge security flaw. It can be completely safe and poses no risk. But I can't verify it and I can't find anywhere who alone vouches for this recording. You are at risk. Overall this is a great frame at a good price. It does everything expected of a frame and more. It works very well and I haven't had any issues with what I've been using it for. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with their purchase if they weren't as concerned about safety as I am.
