The diameter is not 8.5 inches, but only 7 3/4 inches.
I was going to buy an 8.5 inch ball from the store for my daughter but decided to see if it was smaller. There were, but they are significantly smaller than in the store. Its circumference is just over 27 inches, which is 8.5 inches. They measure 24.50 inches (highly inflated) which is only 7 3/4 inches. That's a huge difference in size compared to a true 8.5 inch ball. Disappointed.
