Nice surprise

I hesitated to buy this helmet because the price was so low. I decided to take a look anyway, I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. I compared this helmet to Bell Draft MIPS. Of course, this Base Camp helmet doesn't have MIPS, but the shells are similar. The weight. Base Camp ACE II weighed 280 grams, Bell - 295 grams. Quality. I won't break both helmets to test impact resistance, but Base Camp's quality is close to Bell. The density of the foam rubber and shell are comparable, both in thickness and density. Bell just seems more sophisticated and accomplished. The binding of the shell is strong in both cases. The only thing that really bothers me is the Basecamp straps. As you can see in the photo it has a "mesh" inside, I'm worried it might shear on impact. Though pure speculation on my part. There is a CPSC sticker on the helmet. The base camp has a longer shell and a slightly better fit. Both are highly adjustable for a wide range of sizes. The bell appears to ride slightly higher than the head, about 1 inch, so there's less lateral coverage. Style. Base Camp ACE II is a cool helmet. My wife remarked that it looked like a Stormtrooper helmet. Matte white looks good, I prefer glossy. The Bell has more vents, but the Base Camp channels air well over the head. Aerodynamics. I don't have a wind tunnel, but base camp looks pretty aerodynamic. All in all, it looks like a solid buy at half the price of the Bell Draft MIPS (I found it on sale for $50). According to a previous reviewer, Base Camp helmets hold up well to falls. So I would be confident in this purchase.
