Review on πŸ”‹ Durable Duracell Procell 9V Batteries - Pack of 12, with Varying Packaging Options by Tony Stone

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The country of manufacture changed at the end of 2017

I bought my first box of these batteries in July 2015 and am very happy with them. All 12 were fully charged and the 'use by' date was March 2019 with a shelf life of just under 4 years. The box and batteries were marked "Assembled in USA", although this text implies that the components were manufactured outside of the USA. Plastic protective caps had holes at the top, making them easy to check with a voltmeter. The few I have left from this purchase are still charged and usable. I would rate this purchase 5 stars. Fast forward 2.5 years to January 2018 and the next box I received (also from Revain) was a little different. All 12 were fully charged (9.6V each), the date was March 2022, again almost 4 years old. However, the new box and batteries are marked 'Made in China', which is a little disappointing. And plastic caps with no holes, which is awkward as all 12 need to be removed to check with a voltmeter than to be reinstalled. Reviews (or Q&A) from a few months ago still reported that they were made (or "assembled") in the US, so the switch to Chinese manufacturing must have been recent. Time will tell if the new version will have the same lifespan as the previous ones. Detailed photos of the latest batteries and packaging are included, along with some side-by-side photos of American batteries from 2015 and Chinese batteries from 2018. It's also interesting that there aren't any sizing issues like some other brands of 9V batteries ; ProCells dimensions are 44 x 26 x 16.5 mm (1.75 x 1.02 x 0.65 in). The dimensions for the 2015 and 2018 models are identical. After bulging several 9 volt batteries and one actually exploding in storage (the floor ruptured and one of the inner cells spat out the B-pillar completely!), I was nervous about buying offshore batteries. The failed 9 volt batteries were not made in China under the "Medical Grade” brand name. I had to throw out half of these after a year or two as they started losing their charge while sitting on the shelf. I bought Procells thinking they were still made in the USA. I hope they last as long as the previous batch.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
