Review on ๐Ÿ’พ Silver Glyph Atom RAID SSD โ€“ External USB-C, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3 (4TB) by Kurt Bravo

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Really fast! For me it's worth the money.

This product really is lightning fast: it consistently performs my full and incremental backups in half (or less) the time it takes my non-RAID "high-speed" USB-C external SSD moves. It is also smaller than these discs and lighter in weight. No hardware problems so far; I'll wait a little more before buying the next drive to see if it works well: It's RAID-0 (meaning no redundancy) so theoretically it's more prone to hardware failure. But to this day, this drive is my number one choice for backups. I hope they come up with more options with more capacity. Addendum: I've bought four of these drives in the past year: three worked very well, but one was so unreliable that it repeatedly crashed my MacBook Pro. I sent it back and received an immediate refund; The other three were great until I upgraded my MacBook system to Catalina. In macOS Catalina 15.4 on MacBooks there were serious problems with high write volumes to RAID drives. Version 15.5 is more stable when accessing RAID drives, but I still see significantly slower backups than previous versions of macOS, and Catalina 15.4 and 15.5 sometimes show erratic behavior for encrypted RAID volumes and partitions. For now, don't upgrade to Catalina if you plan to use a RAID SSD. I hope that a few more versions of Catalina will eventually restore full performance to RAID drives.
