💾 Silver Glyph Atom RAID SSD – External USB-C, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3 (4TB) Review

I have 4 TB to transport my photo library in a compact and handy way. Although I have not yet completed the migration from the SATA drive that I will continue to use as a backup, the write speed of over 800MB/s is a turning point for me.

As a studio pro I've been using Glyph Technology HD drives for years and they're great BUT this one doesn't work as it should. First, it's not Thunderbolt 3, it's TB 3 compatible, but it doesn't have speed. Most likely it is a USB-C controller. That's definitely not a great feat for an $849 SSD raid. I will not buy it again.

Expensive but well thought out and efficient external storage for MBP. Dual SSD storage modules offer impressive speed with a rather warm casing. The polyurethane outer shell is pleasant to the touch and provides a snug, non-slip grip and protection of the metal case. $10-$15. Solid performance overall.

This product really is lightning fast: it consistently performs my full and incremental backups in half (or less) the time it takes my non-RAID "high-speed" USB-C external SSD moves. It is also smaller than these discs and lighter in weight. This thing is very fast! It works well on Windows and macOS. With intensive work it gets quite hot. Some might say it's getting hot. I'm not sure how "compatible" it is with Thunderbolt 3. I cannot mount this drive as a TB3 device; USB only. Checking the connections on a Mac always shows USB and not TB3, unlike my other external drive which only supports TB3 (not USB compatible). I bought this exactly a year ago hoping I could take all my data with me so I could read and write all the time. I use it between two computers (Alienware 17X and Surface (first Pro USB, now Go USB-C)). While it's reading everything I originally put on it (around 2.5TB), I've lost my school and work files a few times. I quickly realized that I couldn't trust anything to this device without backing it up to another drive or cloud server. Really frustrated with how poorly this drive performs.

UPDATE: I've posted a new screenshot as my write speed has improved after removing 70GB of data from my drive. It used to have 20GB of free space left and I assume that was the reason for the slow write speed? I know that not having RAM affects performance, but leaving 20GB of space hasn't been a problem on any of my other SSDs, so I'm deducting a star because I don't just have to leave around 100GB of free space to maintain write speed.
