Review on SoHo Urban Artist 10-Piece Iridescent Metallic Soft Pastels Set: Vibrant Sticks for Art, Drawing, Blending, Layering, and Shading by Wendy Rodriguez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I would give 4.5 stars if that was an option.

I enjoy using and browsing a wide variety of art products. Here's my take on these metallic soft pastels: The Pros: - They're soft and leave a little powder, just like a good soft pastel should. - they really have a metallic hue (a little shine in the light). - they are well - packaged, none of them are broken, none felt like they would break easily - they mix and layer well with each other and with other soft pastels, although some are better than others (see photo) - they are well pigmented. :- The appearance of the colored pencil is very different from how it looks when applied, i.e. what appears light blue is actually quite dark when applied to pastel paper. (This isn't necessarily BAD, but a warning for buyers who might expect otherwise. "Pastel" in this context doesn't mean it's a light color; it refers to the medium.) - I feel like the one who who wrote Revane's descriptor for the use of this color product has never worked with soft pastels before. Soft pastels are best used on paper with few dents (not smooth paper) and are easily smudged or discolored simply from exposure to airflow or contact with another object. Fixatives can be used, but they can change color/pattern. The finished painting (as they are often called) is best framed behind glass in a special way. The suggestion that people could use them in magazines or greeting cards is misleading to those unfamiliar with pastel colors. Likely to cause a mess. For the pastels, the colors aren't listed (a nice feature that's missing). In summary, a good enough product if you want to know or learn how to use soft pastel colors and add some sparkle to your work. However, don't expect them to work like crayons or colored pencils; You will be disappointed.
