The Red Wii Remote works on both Wii and Wii U systems in the US!
This red Wii Remote might be a Japanese import, but it was worth it than the American versions. Firstly it was cheaper for me than the US versions and secondly it works with both Wii and Wii U systems. I have both systems and I have the remote synced to both (one of course). The kids love this Wii remote and prefer it to the black one. The only problem I had so far was that the kids didn't want to give it to me.
