Review on πŸ’‘ Silverstone SX750-PT 750W SFX Power Supply - Fully Modular, 80 Plus Platinum Certified by Major Callaham

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It was very loud. SilverStone replaced it with a silent one. But now the fan hisses up and down.

(This is the original review. Below are some updates that gave me a positive review. This section is for historical reference only.) Wow. I expected this power supply to be a worthy competitor to the elusive Corsair SF750. I was wrong. I would be okay with the poor cables and lower build quality on this SilverStone SX750. The cables are replaced with special cables and hidden in my computer case. never mind However, I have a comment. Fan. It's overwhelmingly LOUD. When I do something challenging, my computer turns into a wind tunnel. This is the noisiest part of my car so far. I thought my motherboard's southbridge fan was noisy, but a BIOS update fixed it, no problem. However, this PSU fan turns on under load and stays at FULL SPEED until I turn my computer off and on again. Even a restart doesn't help. This fan is so loud it gives me a headache. Since my case (Louqe Ghost S1) is very small and relatively open, the sound is completely audible to my annoyance. SilverStone, please do something about it. UPDATE: Before Revain could consider my review for publication, I noticed that the noisy fan issue seems to be widespread and SilverStone encourages anyone with this issue to contact them. I contacted SilverStone (and got a rep straight away, no waits or menus) and they said it was a known issue with this batch. The fan controller comes with broken firmware, so the fan cannot spin or stop when powered on. Two days ago I was able to quickly order a replacement and have it shipped yesterday. Hope this solves the problem. Plus two stars for good service, minus one for shipping costs. I will come back to this review when I get a replacement. UPDATE January 21st: I got a replacement PSU a little over a week ago and it seems to be working really well! The fan stops correctly when it is no longer needed and I can finally sleep at night with the computer on. There are no more complaints about this device. The service I received from Joel at SilverStone was really good and my system wasn't idle that long at all. I sent the PSU in on the 8th and got a replacement on the 12th. The processing time was very fast! Thanks to SilverStone for the right solution. And thanks to Joel for helping me! This completely changed my opinion of SilverStone for the better. Just a note for anyone complaining about fan noise. The first stock batch has version 1.0 of the fan controller firmware. If you have a version 1.0 PSU and the fan is making a loud noise, SilverStone will replace those PSUs for return shipping only. Since this PSU model is now hard to find (along with other ITX PSUs over 700W), an RMA will solve the fan noise issues. Silent power supplies ship with version 1.1 or higher. Update February 28th: I was able to get my hands on an RTX 3080 not too long ago. Before I installed them, the Ryzen 9-5900X and EVGA GTX 650 Ti I was using didn't work well with the PSU, so it worked for me for a while. But about 2 weeks ago I received the RTX 3080 FE. Since then I've been getting random fan accelerations from the PSU to full speed at about 1-2 second intervals, seemingly out of nowhere. I think the PSU turns on the fan (at maximum power) at every peak in power consumption, while it should wait until power consumption is more stable before turning on. It gets really annoying especially when it happens in the middle of the night. For this reason I am deducting 2 stars. I really hope they do something.
