This bottle cage is perfect for me. I ride a fat bike and have a reusable metal bottle that fits perfectly in the cage. The cage flexes a bit to accommodate a bottle, but after that I never heard it rattle or rattle, even when hitting curbs and other small obstacles. After a few rides, I couldn't find any damage to my bottle either. As I said, absolutely perfect for me. Safe, quiet and doesn't overstrain my bottle. In all of this my bike fell over once and as soon as it spun a bit the bottle fell out easily. So no, it may not protect your bottle in a crash or if the bike tips over, but I have no intention of doing so.
