Review on 4 Gallon 135 PSI Oil-Lubricated Compressor By BOSTITCH CAP2041ST-OL by Mark Allen

Revainrating 4 out of 5

BOSTITCH-CAP2041ST-OL 4 gallon 135 PSI

I received this through the ebay Vine Program. Here is what i found: 1. The is a very compact unit that is well balanced. You will still need some strength to pick it up and move it around, but the balance is there so that it is not awkward. My previous compressor was a Makita MAC 2400 which is comparable in capabilities, but larger and with more weight. The design is similar, so balance and weight are not bad ways to compare. No, the design is NOT exact, but similar. 2. As long as we are comparing devices, this unit is a bit quieter to me than the Makita is even though the Makita is supposed to be running at a lower RPM due to large bore size. The Makita does produce more air and it also has dual attachment points where this unit only has one attachment point. So, if you want to run more than one device on this you will need to do a bit of work to add a splitter in the line. The air flow is steady and keeps up with its rating, but that is lower than the Makita and may not run two large air tools concurrently. CHECK your air tool requirement to ensure that the compressor is capable of MORE than what your tool requires! 3. The 4 gallons tank design (2 each two gallons tanks) are well designed and each has a very easy to use drain valve on the bottom of each tank. It is right up front where it is easy to see and easy to use. This size (4 gallon) is good for light usage. The reserve of air in the tank is good for light work. If you have heavy work and need large amounts of air you will want to purchase a larger capacity air tank system. Most of these systems are designed for a 50% duty cycle which means that for every 5 minutes they run they should then be off for 5 minutes. If your air tank is too small, you will be running the compressor more than what it is supposed to be run at. 4. The air filter on this unit is smaller than the Makita and does not have removable filters. It appears that you need to replace the air cleaner assembly when you want a new filter. That is not the best of designs if you work in any type of a dirty environment. Something to think about. If you do not use the compressor very much, it may not be a big issue to you. Maintaining a good clean air flow is critical to optimal operation. 5. The unit does not ship with any added oil. So, if your unit gets handled the way that mine was, expect to have most of the oil on the inside of the shipping container and all over the unit, but NOT in the place it is supposed to be. If this happens, ensure that you purchase 40W oil specifically designed for use in air compressors! DO NOT RUN THE COMPRESSOR WITH LOW OIL! You not only risk damage to the unit, you also risk injury from it! 6. The gauges are very nice size and I find them easy to use for adjustments. Keep in mind that most tools have a range to operate in so we are not talking adjustments of plus or minus 1 pound as you set the pressure. Thus, the gauges work very well even though they do not show very small adjustment marks! 7. The power cord length is very reasonable! It is a bit longer then the Makita which I appreciate since you should NOT use most extension cords for this tool. If you are going to use an extension cord, ensure it is rated for 20 AMPS. Yes, that is an expensive extension cord but is is necessary to protect the compressor from low voltage conditions which increase current draw like crazy. All in all, I find that his is an excellent unit that I would say is designed for a single hose connection. It is very compact and the weight is very reasonable while producing good air-flow and low noise. It also stays in place without walking around while running. The price is also very good compared to other compressors with the capabilities that this unit has. The color is bright enough to help prevent accidents and to make it easy to spot when you get ready to leave a job site.I would recommend this unit if the air-flow volume meets your needs.
