Rediscovering old friends with a new tool

Over the course of two years, I've slowly upgraded my vinyl setup. I started out with a mediocre Pyle Pro turntable and preamp at best. I got rid of it when I realized I couldn't turn the volume up to an acceptable level without starting a feedback loop. I upgraded to ATLP120 which still works. I used the built in preamp for a while but when I switched to an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge the sound became terrible. So I did the deed and removed the preamp. I've been using a Pyle Pro preamp with direct pickup output for about a year. At this point, the turntable's mains power supply only powered the turntable. The pickup output went straight to the preamp. The sound was acceptable and decent until it became hoarse at times. It wasn't because the records were playing because sometimes they sounded good and sometimes they didn't. I decided it was time to switch to a dedicated MM preamp. Basically I just wanted the on and off to stop, and I wanted the volume to be loud enough without the increasingly annoying hiss I was noticing. I also suspected that the left channel was slightly preferred. My suspicions were confirmed when I plugged in this ProJect preamp. Not only did this fix the above issues, but it also improved the sound in ways I could never have imagined! I can't wait to get back to my Genesis and Floyd albums with this stuff. Fantastic in speakers and headphones! Worth every penny!
