Not the cheapest option and if you have an MC cartridge you will pay even more but this little box turned out to be just what I wanted. I have an Onkyo 8020 receiver with a phono stage preamp, but my desk makes a lot of noise. I've tried grounding it (it doesn't have a ground wire), reversing the plug, and fixing the ground loop, but nothing worked. Finally I said let's try a different preamp. Over the course of two years, I've slowly upgraded my vinyl setup. I started out with a mediocre Pyle Pro turntable and preamp at best. I would like to get a bigger device, but I just don't have the space. I bought this as a replacement for the phono stage in my Integra receiver. The Integra phono stage is too analytical and etched. All right / dignified. I'm not saying it's often used in a derogatory sense - it's a legitimate decent/regular product meant to sound great to decent/regular players. A great budget option for budget turntables that goes well with anything in the $100-$150 range. . But I wouldn't buy this if your player is higher quality than this one. The sound really aims for that flat phono sound you want from classic rock (like CSNY, the Beatles, etc.). It seems that this unit may have been designed for use
