Review on Pro Ject Phono Box Preamplifier Black by Kari Miller

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The ideal preamplifier for a receiver with or without a bad phono stage.

I have an Onkyo 8020 receiver with a phono stage preamp, but my desk makes a lot of noise. I've tried grounding it (it doesn't have a ground wire), reversing the plug, and fixing the ground loop, but nothing worked. Finally I said let's try a different preamp. By plugging the Pro-Ject from my desk into my receiver's CD input, the sound quality improved dramatically. Bypassing the preamp drastically reduced background noise and hum to the point that I don't even hear rumble, hum or desk noise. The sound is very clear and the RIAA equalization curve sounds right as the music reflects sounds rich and full of bass and treble and appears to be essentially a "flat" box. There's no volume control, but if you're using it in place of a receiver preamp like I do, it doesn't matter since your receiver controls the volume.

Pros
  • Not just useful for its intended purpose
