I usually use a Sony voice recorder for my work (reporter), but I don't always have access to it. I found this Panasonic in my office and used it as a backup for a while until I discovered how awful it was. The audio quality is fuzzy, with a lot of static, and I have to listen to the same ten seconds of the interview over and over again, trying to decipher what the person was saying. This is also helped by the fact that the controls are completely uncomfortable for the user. Need to rewind? Carefully! The fast forward and rewind will take you back in second increments, then 10 second increments, then 1 minute increments - in very quick succession. If you need to go back 30 seconds, it's REALLY easy to go back to the beginning of the recording. This is the most illogical control scheme I've ever encountered. And if, for example, you want to transfer audio files to your computer for easier management with Windows Media Player and you don't have the software CD that came with the recorder, forget it! Sony cares about its customers: connect their recorders via USB and your computer will recognize them as if they were USB sticks; You don't need any software to navigate or copy anything. Panasonic is apparently a company full of top-notch assholes: you can't even access the recorder's folders without the software. I downloaded the version online after a long search - and it didn't work. So I contacted Panasonic by phone - they will not help. I went through their online chat option: all they did was take me back to the same useless download I had already tried. They eventually referred me to a third party, not Panasonic, who sells the software for around $60. At that moment I raised my hands to the sky. I don't think I've ever had such a bad opinion of a company as I have of Panasonic. Maybe Bank of America. May be.
