Kind of a disappointment

I am new to planing/carving and thought it would be best if I used a suitable wood for this activity so I ordered this one. I had to save money, go to Laws and buy a piece of white pine. This is what it looks like, this is how it smells and this is how it cuts. If it's a typical basswood, it's good for carving, but WAY overpriced. For now I'm sticking with White Pine.
