Got this as the first pack of wood I've ever carved and the first 1x1x4 block was perfect, smooth to cut and never splintered. This is one of those items I question whether to write a review. This is just wood. Can it be better, be giftable, sturdy? This is good wood, great for whittling or hobby stuff. This is my first attempt at woodcarving. The blocks are exactly as described, containing a good variety of sizes for undertaking a variety of projects. The basswood is either a bit harder than I expected or my new Flexcut knives are not as sharp as I expected, so I found that making V-cuts or Stop-cuts was not as easy as I expected. This Bass Wood is from China. it is a very poor quality and is difficult to carve. Do yourself a big favor and buy a good quality Bass Wood from North America or Canada.

Good wood for smaller carving projects - 3 to 6 inch pieces. The larger pieces of wood seemed a little harder wood. I had to really work at removing some wood due to the hardness of the wood.
