The convenience of the wood being already cut into blanks.

I ordered this so I could try spoon carving, and so far it’s been very easy to work with each different kind of wood , though you have to be careful with the basswood blank because it’s a soft wood and it’s easy to take too much off if you’re not careful. These arrived early and in great shape. It was an excellent product for the price . I’d recommend this to everyone wanting to try their hand at beginning wooden spoon carving. They make excellent handmade gifts for the holidays. All in all an…

Pros
  • Great pieces, wish they had been longer for cooking spoons.
Cons
  • Spoon blanks are good sized, but both arrived with cracks.

Fun For Me And My Grandson

Bought these to teach my Grandson how to whittle/carve. I remember my Dad actually taking the time to sit down and show me how to do these from an old lightning-struck cottonwood, and my mother proudly using the utinsels her son made.I don't have the lightning-struck cottonwood, but I'm hoping to plant a strong memory in my Grandson's mind.and I know my daughter will love anything he does.

Pros
  • Nice smooth wood, great for beginners
Cons
  • May not be sturdy enough for more advanced carving projects

Half was cracked, but your mileage may vary

The first blank I practiced on was excellent, and the resulting spoon turned out great.I'd avoided starting with the second because a crack was visible on the bowl portion of the basswood blank. Cutting deeper, it had a knot and even more fatal cracks. I ended up sawing most of the bowl portion of the blank away in an attempt to salvage things.Wood is a natural material, so I don't hold it against the maker and distributor, but half of the package probably could have used more quality control.I

Pros
  • easy to carve
Cons
  • Not as visually appealing as pre-carved wooden spoons

Need better quality control

One of the blanks I received had a large split in the middle of the spoon end. Carved it anyway, but this one is completely useless. Wish someone had checked these before shipping because it was easy to see from the outside. The wood was soft and fun to carve for a beginner. Would have been better if they were quality checked before shipping.

Pros
  • 4 pices of wood that are a good quality for carving spoons. Easy to carve for beginners.
Cons
  • May be difficult for younger children to handle

Great starting point for new carvers

I gave these to my husband as part of a themed gift for Christmas. He had said he wanted to start woodcarving now that he's retired, so I gave him these and a few excellent carving tools. Using these helped him learn how to properly use his tools and he had a great time working with them Now we have a new wooden spoon and he's ready to move on to his next attempt. However, my next gift will be protective gloves for his hands!

Pros
  • Great starter for our intro to wood carving. I don’t have a wood shop anymore so these are perfect!
Cons
  • Wood may split or crack during carving

Really good blanks - my new review

Nice thick wood. Mostly easy to carve. The cherry and walnut wood might be a little hard for beginners but others great buy

Pros
  • Very large high quality spoon carved nicely
Cons
  • Shipping may take longer than expected

Nice and thick best in my review

You can make a great spoon with a nice curved handle and deep bowl or slice them lengthwise and make a couple of basic eating/cooking spoons.

Pros
  • Cuts like wood. Holds like a spoon.
Cons
  • May not be suitable for those with limited space for carving

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not the size advertised.

These spoons are smaller than the size advertised. The handle is not even a half inch wide. The only correct measurement was the depth, all others are an eighth to a quarter inch smaller.

Pros
  • Excellent stock to make the spoon of your dreams.
Cons
  • May require additional sanding after carving

QUALITY lumber & Carefully CUT

As described. Quality lumber was used. These blank spoons were cut with accuracy. I'm very pleased with this purchase and will be purchasing more blanks.

Pros
  • Quality basswood for carving. Works well.
Cons
  • May require additional safety precautions during carving (e.g. protective eyewear, gloves

Worthwhile value: my feedback

Practice turned into nice results. Worthwhile investment, w order a basswood next. Cherry was perfect for harder wood practice

Pros
  • Great product easy use
Cons
  • May not be suitable for those with limited dexterity

Very nice to have different kinds of woods

The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because these blanks could be just a *little* but bigger, but other than that no complaints. These blanks make it very easy to whittle away to make the spoons of your dreams.

Pros
  • Good size thick spoon blanks. Not whimpy and thin like others. I would buy them again.
Cons
  • Small size may limit creativity

Good cherry wood blanks

The blanks are exactly what I expected. They are good quality cherry with no cracks or checking. Check the dimensions carefully, they are too small for a long handled stirring spoon.

Pros
  • just what I needed for first try at carving spoons
Cons
  • May not be suitable for those with limited access to woodworking tools

Exactly as described!

Very nice wood blanks. Even color and soft enough for beginners to practice with. Came very securely packaged and undamaged in shipment. Great learning tool for someone starting out carving.

Pros
  • Thank you for making this product. I was secured well and protected.
Cons
  • May require special storage to avoid warping or cracking

This basswood is terrible.

I have not carved the walnut or cherry, but the basswood splits on the littlest of knife pulls. There are quite a few knots in the blank. I’d use these for beginners to get a feel for carving, but I wouldn’t buy the basswood expecting to keep any useable item.

Pros
  • Created a spoon out of the basswood blank. Haven’t used the other ones yet. Keep your knife sharp.
Cons
  • Ordered spoon blanks twice. Both times one of the blanks was cracked.

Excellent blanks; beware of cracking

These blanks are great -- as other reviewers have noted, they're a good size and shape, and have the depth to create a pretty wide variety of spoon/ladle profiles.I got these blanks (and a BeaverCraft knife kit) and went to town before knowing the difference between green wood and dry wood. While I know these aren't green wood, I still found that my first two spoons cracked as they dried further. Like I said I didn't know the difference between green wood and dry wood, and probably did…

Pros
  • Nice grain and good color to the wood.
Cons
  • Wood grain may be uneven

Nice quality and great for beginners!

I myself am new to spoon carving. I'm not sure basswood would be my first choice wood for spoons but it's great for the beginner.

Pros
  • 4 yr old grandson making Mother’s Day gifts....these are perfect !
Cons
  • May not be suitable for those with limited funds for woodworking supplies

Very nice items good for me

The spoon blanks are very nice, and IMO, a great buy. Both of them were straight grained with no blemishes. May not be suitable for those with limited outdoor space for carving.

Pros
  • Madera en excelentes condiciones
Cons
  • May not be suitable for those with limited outdoor space for carving

Knot makes trouble.

The looks nice, but the first blank I am using has a knot in the handle. This is making it hard to carve around. That's my feedback.

Pros
  • it is what it is
Cons
  • 2 had splits in the end. Completely unable to salvage the spoon.

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great quality piece of wood.

I used it to make 2 beautiful wooden spoons. The grain was really nice once oiled. They were easy to carve. The basswood was a great quality piece of wood.

Pros
  • Great for my boyscout to practice whittling on
Cons
  • Requires a certain level of skill

Love the spoons I get out of these

I love to carve these spoons. So much fun. Just a little difficult when you come across a knot. But hey. It’s wood. It happens.

Pros
  • This was a gift and the recipient and I were both very please with this product
Cons
  • Arrived with a big crack all the way through one of the spoon blanks.
