Review on Lenovo Gemplus Gempc Smart Card Reader: A Reliable Type II PC Card Smart Card Reader by Tony Trotter

Great PCMCIA card reader

I got this reader to replace my SMC card reader (243) which is pretty much unsupported for Linux anymore as the manufacturer didn't update the drivers as they weren't more with the released Linux kernel worked in 2009. After discovering this after updating my system to the latest version, I ordered this card while on the hardware compatibility list. This card was recognized and the driver was immediately available (no need to download or install the driver provided on the disc). I'm using the coolkey middleware to use a card that needs to be configured before I can use my certificates. I would say the card works great, but unfortunately I use my smart card on the web and Firefox with its current version has problems reading certificates. The bug has been reported and hopefully a fix will be available soon. However, I can authenticate myself with my card instead of entering a username and password combination. Overall great hardware, good support from both the vendor and the Linux community, but a bug in Firefox is preventing me from using the reader as I intended. (Note: Firefox crashes are also known to affect Mac OS, although I'm not sure if the Windows version of Firefox has the same issue.)
