Images appear to be screen printed/painted. Before washing, the underwear was very hard. After washing, they became softer. I also bought the Cars theme; They were similar except the images on the Cars underwear stayed a bit stiff after washing. Depending on how much dye they put on the underwear, it may or may not go completely soft. Both brands are handmade. My son just started wearing 2T pants. I bought the 4T underwear because I read other reviews that they run small. And I'm grateful that I did. Elastic waistband fits perfectly.
