Review on SAMSUNG 4K UHD Tilt Adjustable Curved Computer Monitor LU32R590CWNXZA, 31.5" DIsplay, Flicker-Free & Blue Light Filter, Borderless Design by Adam Ayyagari

Gamma unevenness cannot be compensated for without full color calibration.

I was trying to replace an old TCL TV that was being used as a monitor but since it didn't have HDMI 2.0 inputs it could only support 4k at 30Hz. This monitor definitely supports 4k @ 60Hz but the picture quality is just terrible. When an old TCL TV beats your picture quality, you know you've done something wrong, Samsung. Gamma is fairly uneven between colors and tends to obscure highlights while suppressing black - only the midtones are visible from afar. The uniformity is so bad that adjusting the RGB color space can't fix it, and overcoming it would require a full color calibration, which I haven't tried. However, the image quality was so poor that improving the viewing geometry was no longer a problem. Cable management leaves a lot to be desired, too, with the ports located just behind the stand itself and facing up, making connections tight and fiddly. While I haven't even tried playing games on it, I suspect these monitors do it quite well (at least) as I could detect very slight flickering even at 60Hz in some grayscale images. With such images there was no noticeable flicker on the TV even at 30Hz, so I suspect the monitor is sensitive enough at higher frame rates. If only the picture were better, and that's more important to me. I think I'll go for a bigger TV instead (50" flat 😞) with HDMI 2.0/2.1 inputs. What a disappointment.
