It's not covered by anything - it's just a fabric for liquid to flow through. It also doesn't regulate the temperature - it's INCREDIBLY hot to sleep on and I'm not the hot sleeper type, I'm usually always cold. Climbing onto the mattress hurts as expected but the zipper is pretty awful and an added annoyance. It's so bad that I'm not even sure I got a genuine item as all the other reviews seem so good. But ours was a lot worse than Walmart's $30 mattress topper, and we spent nearly $200 on it total. I would return it for a refund but of course we didn't realize how bad it was until we had used it for a while and the return window was closed.
