Review on πŸ“š Ultimate Protection: mCover Hard Shell Case for Microsoft Surface Book Computer 1, 2 & 3 (15-inch Display, Black) by Gary Knop

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Many thanks to iPearl on behalf of all 15 " Surface Book 2 owners.

I got tired of waiting for Urban Armor Gear to come out with a case to match the 15" Putting SB2 together and looking up cases everywhere I could find them. Who would have thought that my biggest problem when switching from Mac to Surface would be finding a case? It seemed ridiculous that nobody would take on the challenge of building a product for sometimes clumsy folks like me who desperately want to protect their $2,500+ investment from scratches, chips and dents. Until iPearl brought it to life. This product is fun and comes in a variety of fun colors too! What I ordered is a beautiful and deep translucent purple that I have adored since I was a kid playing Pokemon on my Atomic Purple Game Boy Color. It's a little more pigmented than the understated purple GBC or N64 controller, but welcome. The bright tone really stands out from the crowd of soft gray magnesium/aluminum laptops. In the photos I tried to capture it under different lighting settings, the first being pure white CFL and the second being soft white/amber incandescent light. I've been using Speck cases for my old MacBooks for years and this case feels right at home. Installation is easy, simply snapping into place with plastic clips on the bottom and top of the Surface Book. Then everything is ready! I would like to point out that you can still use your Surface in any orientation with this case; Laptop mode, Tablet mode, View mode (screen flipped and fixed), and Studio mode (screen flipped and fixed, bottommost). You can also use a magnet to attach the Surface Pen to the side of the screen on either side, as there is room for iPearl to clearly accommodate them in its design. The differences are small but welcome. The Speck case uses a matte soft-touch plastic that feels matte and smooth. It uses textured plastic, which is nice to the touch but not as nice and smooth as the Speck. The bottom has a ribbed texture that prevents kneeling from becoming too slippery. Oddly enough, in the images of this product, the top of the case has the same ribbed texture as the bottom; it is not. That's a nice difference for me, as I prefer the flat plastic look of the top case. The rear legs also fold out to elevate the device slightly, which is great for ergonomic typing, and it also helps tilt the screen a bit in Studio mode, making it feel a bit closer to the Surface Studio's corner. There's also a small guide next to the charging port that helps route the cable down the side, which is nice, but I wish it was a little thinner. Sometimes the charging port sticks out a bit because this plastic guide pushes the cable away from the computer. But not often enough to be a problem. The only other annoyance I had was that while the rear legs have holes for rubberized pads like the front ones, mine didn't mount with them. But that's okay, you can always add a little later and I honestly didn't feel the need, the front pads are grippy enough to compensate. All in all, if you have a Surface Book 2 15" and are looking for the right case: buy this one! For me, it has lasted over 6 months since my purchase on March 30, 2018, and as a student, sticking it in a laptop bag with a bunch of other tech almost every day seems like the best proxy option, but it's still a great case that anyone with an SB2 will appreciate.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • No performance
