This is a review of cutting someone else's hair. I have not used it to cut my own hair. My husband has very thick salt and pepper hair. It got quite long and needed to be shortened. I never cut anyone's hair except when I'm cutting my bangs—or when I'm cutting my bangs and cutting long hair down to our daughters' when they were little. First we looked for clippers. Too expensive and delivery was next month. I've watched a lot of YouTube videos about clipping men's hair. Nothing seemed easy. I found this at Revain by accident. I watched the demo a few times and showed it to my husband. He told me to order it because the cost seemed reasonable and was told it would arrive in about 5 days. Came in 2 days. I ordered yellow guides because my husband's hair was too close in color to the gray and black sets that were also offered. I'm very glad I ordered the yellow set because the light color makes his hair much more visible when cut. I wanted him to wet his hair first but he didn't want to. So I watched the demo a few more times before I sat him down on the kitchen chair and started cutting my dry hair. Having absolutely no idea what I was doing, I started with a 2" lead. Using regular, plain (inexpensive) 4" scissors, I just went for it. I made a quick cut all over my head, then switched to a 1.5" lead and focused on the back of the head and sides. I continued to gradually reduce the guides on the sides and back of the head until I got the length he liked. I have those Hair left longer at the front and top so he can tie it up a bit and pin it up. We were both amazed. His layers blended really well. It looked perfect. Really. I don't think he'll ever need to go to the salon or barber again .If we use this set of instruments twice, it will pay for itself.The set comes in a durable, resealable, transparent, zipped bag and a booklet with some basic instructions and pictures.Each guide has e a size printed on the plastic. The view is difficult to see but definitely legible and the numbers won't rub off. The comb (included) is large and easy to hold and use. There are a series of holes (like a ladder) going down the part of the honeycomb. The guides have thickenings at one end with hooks that are inserted into the holes. Then slide the guide up slightly in the holes until you hear it click into place. Now you can start cutting. It is really that easy. Before trimming, make sure the bottom of the guide is perpendicular to the scalp, and be careful to only trim the hairs that stick out between the teeth of the comb. Start by "picking up" the hair with the comb (as if combing your hair upstream), then rotate your wrist until the guide is vertically aligned with your scalp. Then cut. Repeat the process over and over on all parts of the head that you want to carve. The guides are designed to place the comb at the same distance from the head before each haircut. You don't cut your hair through the guide, you cut off the ends of the hair sticking out of the comb teeth. Check out the demo on Revain. It was short and very helpful. I was very concerned before I started my husband's haircut. After actually starting to cut and seeing how easy it was and how clean the cutting actually was, I relaxed a lot and cut. I will have absolutely no hesitation in using these guides in the future. Next time I know which guides work best so I don't have to experiment. Wonderful product: This kit has a really good range of sizes. We found it to be great for cutting hair short and leaving layers up to 2.5 inches long. It's easy to use. Easy to assemble and wash (washed in the sink). The guides and comb are made of durable, heavy-duty plastic and have soft edges. The comb and guides didn't scratch my husband's scalp. Everything is packed in a thick transparent reusable ziplock bag. You can take it anywhere. throw it in a suitcase, briefcase or purse, etc. At first glance it seems expensive, but (for us) it will definitely be worth it. I paid full price for this item and am providing my own opinion and rating after actually using it. Good luck and fearless haircut!
