Calico Joe, written by John Grisham, is a novel about two major league baseball players, their families and fans. Much of this is told by Paul Tracy, the son of Warren Tracy, a journeyman pitcher who retired from the New York Mets in 1973 when Paul was eleven. The book jumps back and forth between 1973 and thirty years in the future. This is a wonderful story that immerses the reader in a professional baseball environment. Paul, like many boys, loved baseball and played in the minor leagues; and closely followed his favorite major league players and teams, including creating scrapbooks about them and collecting baseball cards. In 1973, Joe Castle of Calico, Arkansas, was drafted from the minor leagues to play first base for the Chicago Cubs after two of their fielders were injured. Unlike most freshmen, Joe Castle won the hearts of every Cubs fan and most other baseball fans with a fantastic start to his major league career. He broke numerous previous rookie records including consecutive home runs, total home runs, hits, batting average and stolen bases. He became Paul Tracy's hero in his first game when he hit three home runs. The story eventually brings the Mets pitcher (Warren Tracy), with his firm belief in baseball's longstanding confrontational tradition, into a fight with Paul and his mother on a New York field with the Cubs' savior (Calico Joe). in the stands. The book reveals the lingering aftermath of that 1973 fight for Warren Tracy and Joe Castle and their families. I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. As you'd expect, Grisham has created a compelling path with a great ending that the reader will love. I also liked it because it reminded me how much I loved baseball and how much I admired some baseball players when I was a boy. If you like baseball, read this book! But it's also worth reading because it's a great story about interesting people who succeed in overcoming the difficulties that life throws in front of them.
