In the 10 to 30 cm range, FD-1 is the best choice as a diffuser. Two settings for the FD-1 include .

The LG-1 worked well and I bought the FD-1 thinking it was an upgrade. It is not. They work differently and have different uses. The LG-1 directs continuous light onto a ring around the lens. The FD-1 is a diffuser that can also work with LED permanent light. The FD-1 fires the flash at the lens and then forward, but doesn't surround the lens with even lighting. For very close-up shots with a microscope setting, especially with a focus overlay setting, the LG-1 offers even illumination around the entire perimeter, allowing you to get closer to the subject. Please note, that LG-1 only works with LED. While the FD-1 can work with both LED and flash, it is optimized for flash. In the 10 to 30 cm range, FD-1 is the best choice as a diffuser. Two settings for the FD-1 include moving the small blade in front of the flash for more or less diffusion. With a focus range of 5-15 cm, additional spread may be better, with a distance of more than 30 cm you need a full flash without FD-1. Now that I have both, should I keep them? Yes, but only because the small additional cost of the FD-1 outweighs the shipping costs. Should you get both? Depends on your needs, but probably not. For the shortest distances, less than 10 cm, the LG-1 is better; and for focus stacking the LG-1 is a must. If the flash is 15-30cm away, the LG-1 will block the flash and you need FD-1. The FD-1 is designed for scuba diving, while the LG-1 is not. 1 to 15 cm in constant light and I can only carry one, I will use the LG-1. The first three shots used Penny Focus Stacking. They are no flash, continuous LG-1 (most uniform lighting) and continuous FD-1. The next two photos show the blade in the down and up positions of the FD-1. [Note that I haven't measured which lighting mode drains the battery faster, but obviously your charge won't last as long if you always use a flash or LED. If you don't already have them, it might make more sense to buy a charger with extra batteries on the first purchase, and then choose the LG-1 or FD-1 on the second purchase. ] The following two photos show the blade in the down and up positions on the FD-1.
