The mesh panels are lined with fabric inside to protect the foot from the mesh, but it is not a soft fabric. Children complain that their feet rub very unpleasantly when they walk. This is unlike other water shoes we have (like the Speedo) where the inner fabric over the mesh sections is soft/low friction. Also, adjusting the size on the back makes it difficult to put the shoe on. If you pull on it to get your foot in, it will close your mouth and make your job much more difficult.
