These lights are so bright it hurts my eyes to look at them - they fit perfectly with what I need in my living room but I have my hands wrapped around a paper lantern (which works great!) to soften the light. I didn't use the motion detector so I have no opinion. They will NOT work with a dimmer as they flicker which is a huge disappointment given their incredible brightness.
