I serviced the rear hub pawls a month ago before storing my MTB for two weeks. I liberally applied Biogrease to all surfaces of the ratchet before reassembling the hub. I've ridden it four times, once on trails (10 miles) and three times on tarmac, about 50 miles total. At first my dogs were very quiet, but now they are making loud clicking noises again. I interpret the noise change as a partial loss of viscosity of the lubricant. By comparison, my other rear wheel put in a few hundred miles on heavy petroleum grease and the pawl noise hasn't increased. , Sonic changes appear to be too rapid for a lubricant that only runs with low mileage and light cycles in 100% dry conditions. I'm glad I didn't lubricate my Biogrease bearings. I will continue to use Biogrease on pedal threads and other low shear parts. For higher wear parts I use a non-biodegradable, high quality synthetic lubricant.
