The beanie is extra thick and perfect for cold weather. The scarf is thinner than a hat, but perfectly protects the neck from the wind. It's getting cold here in Michigan and it's so nice to have a round scarf for my toddler because it keeps making other scarves fall off. He can forget it and he will stay and keep him warm. I could take some thread and tie a hat to a scarf so he doesn't bunch up when he takes it off on the bus. The material is soft, elastic, beautiful gray color. I can highly recommend this set because of the low price.
