Not working for my application

I didn't use it as intended but should have seen the result I wanted. I have very hard water in Florida. I filled a mesh bag with gravel and placed it in an aquarium filter set on a 30 gallon fish tank. After a few weeks of use, my water levels stayed the same. With the addition of baking soda my PH became neutral, my KH is high and my GH is very high at the bottom of the chart, no change after using the gravel.
