After a full season of single track mountain biking in Colorado (3,000+ miles) and 100,000+ feet of climbing/peddling - hop them back whenever the time comes . They're bulletproof, don't slip/slip and my goodness, they pedal well. I think they offer great breathability too - of course you'll swear, but I never "notice" them when they're on. Honestly, after 3-4 hour rides on difficult, technical climbs, longer climbs to the summit, clumsy descents - these knee pads stay in place and 'play'. You want to put them on and forget them. They're right where you want them, when you need them. Wash well too, no real signs of wear on ANY fabric (except where I might have hit something, or the occasional pedal tip leaving a small hole in the back of the pad. It happens). But even in this case, the holes do not get bigger and will last 2 seasons if washed every 3-5 trips.
