Our new washing machine and computer circuit board (apparently they're all on the computer now) and our pre-Civil War house didn't get along. Apparently, computer circuit boards are extremely delicate and any fluctuation in electrical current will cause the circuit boards to rupture and shut down the device. This backup solved the problem. It's been three months since we last called washing machine service (to swap out another computer circuit board) and we haven't had any problems since we plugged our washing machine into the surge protector.
